New law to curb hoarding of milk powder

In a bid to curtail hoarding, the Government will register warehouses where milk powder should be stored, the Consumer Affairs Authority announced yesterday. CAA Chairman Rumy Marzook said this measure was taken following recent raids of warehouses where milk powder companies had hoarded thousands of kilograms of milk powder, thereby creating a shortage in the market.

A gazette notification on Friday night made it compulsory for all milk powder companies to allow their warehouses and stores to be inspected by the CAA. The notification states that no importer, manufacturer or distributor of milk powder shall store, stock or keep milk powder either in packs or in bulk in any warehouse, store and/or any other place unless it is registered with the CAA.

Recently, two warehouses — in Welisara and Seeduwa — were raided by CAA officials. The Seeduwa warehouse had 200,000 packets of milk powder (400grams) while the Welisara warehouse had 12,000 kilograms.
