New book detailing life as a planter
“It’s A Spade”, a book by retired planter Deepal Peiris will be launched on Sunday, January 5 at 4.30 p.m. at Eighty Club, No. 85, Independence Avenue, Colombo 7. His passion for the tea and rubber industry is shared in this honest account of life as a planter, the day to day running of an estate, the politics and issues he faced along the way.
This story takes the reader on a journey of discovery from the young outgoing Moratuwa boy striving to please his parents, to a young man making his way in the industry alone and his achievements. He relates amusing and exciting moments he shared with lifelong friends, his moments of stubbornness, through to his contented days as a husband and father of two sons – a family man who learnt the value of reflection and forgiveness. He speaks candidly of his life and how the people around him have influenced and challenged him to be the man he is today.
