A Reflection on Repercussion
Seasoned cinematographer Jayanath Gunawardena’s maiden direction, ‘Parawarthana’ (Reflection) a thrilling family drama set in a Sri Lankan rural locality in the 1970s is now being screened at Regal Colombo and other CEL circuit cinemas around the country. The film depicts the poor villagers’ struggle for survival, their day to day events, with the price they pay for their deeds. Moving over a brief period of a month the film story takes place from one Poya day to the next.
With a stellar cast including Dhulani Anuradha, Bimal Jayakody, Amila Nadeeshani, Nalin Pradeep Uduwela, Sarath Kothalawala, Maureen Charuni, Geetha Kanthi Jayakody, Aruna Dhammika, Saman Weerasiri the film will bring veteran film actor Somy Rathnayake after long silence. Making her debut child actress Sakunu Mallawaarachchi plays a vital role in the film.
Woven based on the universally accepted principle that man cannot escape from divine punishment for whatever wrongs he has committed in this world.
“This is a story that had been developing within me for a long time,” Jayanath an award winning cinematographer who had worked in more than 35 films told TV Times. Jayanath has worked as an assistant director in 75 films.
“Since I have been involved in cinema for so long, it was easy for me to see almost all the scenes in my mind before even going to the locations,” he said.
“There are producers who had become directors even after their first film. But there are hardly any cinematographers who had become directors,” says the cinematographer turned filmmaker who is glad about his achievement.
Started with Dharmasena Pathiraja’s ‘Soldadu Unnahe’ in which Joe Abeywickrema and Geetha Kumarasinghe played the lead roles, Jayanath is a cinematographer who has gained an in depth knowledge on the subject he handles and is keen to update himself on cinema. He won the Presidential award for ‘Soldadu Unnahe’ and later for Wasantha Obeysekara’s ‘Dorakada Marawa’ as the best cinematographer.
In the technical side the art direction is handled by Manjula Ayagama, editor-Ruwan Chamara, make-up artist Indika Udaara Lanka, production manager-Ashoka Ariyar, assistant director- Donald Jayanatha, sound recording-Sumith Priyankara and the musical score is by Dinesh Subasinghe. Sanjaya Nirmal handled the publicity for ‘Parawarthana’ which is co-produced by Mohommad Mujahid, Chanika Ranganath Dias and Jayanath himself.
