The Pettah was abuzz yesterday when acclaimed film-maker Chandran Rutnam began shooting the ‘court scene’ in ‘According to Mathew’ based on the notorious Vicarage double murders which rocked Sri Lanka in the 1980s. The filming resumed last week, after a six-month break.

Authentically recreating the ‘courts’ in the old Town Hall building off Main Street, the ‘takes’ shot yesterday included Bollywood star Jacqueline Fernandez in the role of Daphne (as Delrene Ingram is known in the film) being mobbed by the press as she is brought to court; a hearing in the court; and the ‘couple’ — Alston Koch who plays the role of Fr. Mathew Peiris and Jacqueline on hearing the verdict of guilty against them.

In these double murders which shook the very roots of Colombo society in the early 1980s, Fr. Mathew Peiris, exorcist and Pastor of St. Paul’s, the Anglican Church down Kynsey Road, and Delrene Ingram were convicted of killing both Russel (Delrene’s husband) and Eunice (Fr. Mathew’s wife). While death sentences were passed on the duo, the Court of Appeal acquitted Delrene on appeal.
