Jobs which were once the exclusive preserve of men are now being taken over by females in many sectors.

The Sri Lanka Railways Department is the latest to open its doors to women in what had been originally a male preserve . Today women are also being recruited to the department for painting of carriages, electrical repairs, sewing of seat covers, fabrication of name boards as well as technical jobs.

The women were initially recruited as unskilled workers when regular positions fell vacant.

“Most of the girls working here including myself are ‘A’ level qualified, but society looks down on us because of the type of job we perform,” one of the new recruits who identified herself as Devika told us.

“We are satisfied with our jobs, and look forward to a time when the dignity of labour is recognized and all professions are equally esteemed” she said.
