With medicinal drug prices soaring, the People’s Movement for the Rights of Patients (PMRP) and other civic action groups will conduct a demonstration outside the Fort Railway Station on Friday, January 24, to urge the Government to implement the National Medicinal Drugs Policy (NMDP).

A PMRP spokesperson said that if the NMDP, based on Prof. Senaka Bibile’s essential medicines concept, was implemented by the Government, quality drugs could be made available to the people at affordable prices.

The PMRP spokesperson said a comprehensive draft for the NMDP had been approved by the Cabinet in 2005, but its implementation was delayed because vested interests were blocking it.

At the demonstration, PMRP members and others will distribute leaflets, explaining the urgent need to implement the NMDP and the enormous relief it will provide to millions of people, whose health care bills are taking a large part of the family income.
