Sri Lanka Girl Guides commemorated World AIDS DAY by holding an art competition and an exhibition, organized by the Community and Social Development subcommittee of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association. Four groups consisting of Guides, Senior Guides, Non Guides and Scouts participated in the activities and the association invited all the schools from the Western Province to participate in this programme.

The day’s events started with a lecture and a film about AIDS.  Girl Guide Leader Dr. Ms. Wajira Wanigasekera addressed the participants explaining about the HIV virus, and how it contaminates and the methods of preventing AIDS.

As a valued addition The Family Planning Association had a stall with a well versed Counsellor to offer advice related to family planning issues. Three lady doctors from the Health Ministry and National STD/AIDS Control Programme led by Dr. Ms. Janaki Vidanapathirana, and a lecturer from the Aesthetic University Mr. P. Jayawardana and Girl Guide Leader Ms.Thilini Athukorale were there to do the judging.

The Director of the Family Planning Association Ms. Thushara Ranasinha distributed the awards and the certificates to all participants.

(Deputy Chief Commissioner Girl Guides), Mr. Lasanta Goonarathna, Deputy Director, Family Planing Association, spoke to the audience offering some valuable advice to students as well as to the elders.
