Trio arrested for allegedly robbing old couple of cash, jewellery
View(s):Three people were taken into custody for allegedly robbing an elderly couple who had arrived in Colombo from Jaffna, to travel to Britain, police said. According to the police, the suspects posing as military intelligence personnel, had ordered the couple into a parked three-wheeler at Braybrooke Place, Colombo 2. and proceeded towards Kollupitiya.
The suspects had accused the old couple of having links to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), and said they would have to arrest them.
The old couple were further told that if they wished to avoid arrest, they should part with their cash and jewellery, and the victims had reluctantly complied. The suspects had later driven away in the three-wheeler after “assaulting” the driver.
Subsequently, the elderly couple had lodged a complaint at the Kollupitiya Police Station. Three days later, the three-wheeler driver turned up at the Kollupiitya police station and informed the police that his vehicle which was “stolen” earlier, had been found in Malabe. However, the police on questioning, had found that the three-wheeler driver was also involved in the heist. The driver and his two accomplices were arrested.
