Spin trio guide Royal to victory
The right and left arm spin combination of Randev Pathirana and Harith Samarasinghe along with Thiran Dhanapala guided Royal Colombo to a convincing innings and 121 runs win over St. John’s Jaffna in the Under 19 inter-school cricket encounter concluded at the Johnian ground in Jaffna yesterday.
In fact Royal was home for tea after Harith ran through the Johnian batting with impressive figures of 6 for 31 to bowl out the home team, batting the second time with a deficit of 263 runs, to a low score of 122.
A match bag of 11 for 98 by Malith Mahela helped Mahinda coast to an easy ten wicket over Revatha MMV Balapitiya in the Under 19 match which ended at Galle.
Mahinda put themselves in a strong position at the end of the first day’s play after bowling out their opponents’ to a low score of 142. They ended the day on 186 for 4. Resuming their innings on the second day saw them post a formidable score of 292.
Revatha MMV batting the second time, with a deficit of 150 runs, found Malith too hot to handle. They managed to avoid an innings defeat, making 184, but gave the home team a simple run chase of 35 runs which Mahinda needed 8.2 overs to reach.
A career best knockoff 178 inclusive of 28 boundaries and three sixes by Prince of Wales allrounder Shanuka was the highlight of the morning sessions play on day two in their match against St. Peter’s played at Moratuwa.
However Shanuka’s knock was in vain as it could not prevent the Cambrians from conceding a first inning lead to the Peterites.
St. Sebastian’s had to be satisfied with a first inning win over St. Anthony’s Katugastota in the match which ended at Moratuwa.
St. Sebastian’s having made a formidable 300 for 5 declared, thanks to a fine knock of 136 by Sangeeth Cooray on day one, bowled out the Antonians resuming on their overnight score of 30 for 2 to a score of 177.
Wesley dominated the proceedings in their match against Kingswood which concluded at Campbell Park.
The match between Anuradhapura Central and Piliyandala Central played at Anuradhapura ended in a first inning win for the former.

Mahanama, spearheaded by top scorer S. Kaushalya (63 in 96 balls with 12 boundaries) made a valiant effort to overhaul Trinity’s imposing total of 269 and fell short by 17 runs at Asgiriya.
