the Milo Inter-Schools Under 18 Sevens Championships, which were held at the Royal Sports Complex yesterday. The margin of victory could have been much broader had the Royalists converted some of the chances they created, but nevertheless they never looked in trouble during any point in the match. Their win also propelled them directly into the semis after they received a walkover in the quarter-final.

The Royalists started the game strongly, fluently threading the ball through to the open man, who more often than not left a line of defenders tackling his lengthening shadow. Within a couple of minutes, Royal was on the board through winger Mahima Gamage, who crossed the line for an unconverted try. However, Royal was unable to continue with the scoring, suffering chiefly from errant passing, and things proceeded into halftime stuck at 5-0. However, the home side did manage to make amends for their sloppiness toward the tail-end of the match, finishing off their opponents with a sweeping move down the left side of the field. A clutch of quick passes released Center Sajad Irshad who tumbled over the line to polish up a slightly rough-edged win.

In today’s Cup quarter-final matches, Trinity College will go up against Dharmaraja College at 9.30 a.m. followed by a clash between Isipathana and Kingswood. In the semi-finals, Royal College will meet St. Peter’s College, who also benefited from a bye to progress directly to the semi-finals.
