Scaled down, Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort to be ready soon
View(s):Hong Kong-based Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort and Spa is to be completed by the end of this year or early next year by scaling down construction work under the first phase of the project, informed sources said.
“Pressure exerted by a top politician” is leading to the construction work being concluded haphazardly, and may result in a reduction of the number of rooms in the new hotel to 50 or 150 depending on the urgency to finish the project by the top authorities, these sources revealed.
According to the original plan Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort and Spa was to be surrounded by an 18-hole golf course, coconut plantations and sand dunes to the south. Built along the shoreline, the resort will offer 375 rooms including 26 suites ranging in size from 48 square metres to 240 square metres. All rooms would have balconies of the ocean breezes
But the work will be scaled down under the first phase by the company due to unavoidable circumstances, an official involved in the project revealed. Shangri-La Investments Lanka (Pvt) Ltd was established to carry out the project.
