Fake bomb threat on the President

A hunt is on for three students attending a school in Puttalam for allegedly writing a letter that said a bomb threat on President Mahinda Rajapaksa had been planned, a senior police official said.

He said the letter stated that the bomb would be detonated inside the school premises today where the President was due to commission a science laboratory.

The students said to be attending the Zahira Muslim Madhya Maha Vidyalaya in Puttalam are reported to have fled their homes, the official added.

According to the official the students are alleged to have signed the letter as Grade 13 students attending the Kadayamatte Muslim Maha Vidyalaya in Madurankuli.

The letter was sent to the Puttalam Police Station HQI T. Sumanasena yesterday.

Investigations have revealed that the three students were Muslims who had attempted to implicate the school’s Head Prefect because they did not like his appointment as he is an ethnic Tamil.

“This is a school boy prank but nonetheless it is serious in nature and will have to be treated accordingly,” HQI Sumanasekera said.
The students sought for questioning were not available in their homes. Their parents were advised to turn them over at the earliest for further investigations, he said.

Puttalam Police along with several State intelligence agencies are carrying out further investigations into the matter.
