Remembering a humane and religious businessman
The first time I met Mr. Muni Kundanmal, who passed away recently, was in May 1993 when I joined the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka when he was the President of the Chamber. The Chamber was then located in the second floor of the YMBA buildin, Colombo Fort.
I recall that towards the latter part of 1993, the late Mr. Kundanmal with the support of his other council members started construction of the present headquarters building of the Chamber located at No. 450, D.R. Wijewardana Mawatha, Colombo 10. I remember the day when the first sod to lay the foundation stone was cut by him in the presence of dignitaries of all religions. He contributed immensely towards the development of the Chamber. It was his leadership, total commitment and enthusiasm that helped upgrade the chamber to its present status specially by relocating its headquarters at the new building with modern facilities in 1995. Under his leadership, the Chamber made a special effort to collect donations starting with his own contribution towards the building project.
The late Mr. Kundanmal was always of the view that the members of the Chamber should get value added services. He was very concerned about the welfare of the staff. He also said the staff should be made happy if the management wants to enhance their productivity. The strong foundation laid under his leadership has now started bearing fruit. He was fortunate enough to see the developments of the Chamber during his lifetime.
The National Chamber has now become a world recognized trade chamber in the Chamber movement. Mr. Kundanmal was so attached to the Chamber that even after he relinquished his duties as President; he never failed to attend functions of the Chamber whenever he was invited.
Mr. Kundanmal was a well balanced, kind hearted, honest business leader with a strong religious background who always respected human values. I was fortunate enough to associate with the late Mr. Kundanmal very closely for the last 21 years.
May he attain the bliss of Nibbana.
E.M.Wijetilleke, Former Secretary General/CEO of The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka.
