Sri Lanka to popularise Mathematical Modeling
View(s):Sri Lanka is taking its first step towards popularisng Mathematical Modelling as a tool to solve certain real life problems.
The Department of Mathematics, University of Colombo will implement a programme to share its knowledge on this subject among graduate and undergraduate students as well as young researchers.
The aim is to create awareness and popularise this complex subject and its new advances and research results in areas of Mathematical Modelling such as finance, biology, medicine, environment, economic, engineering etc, Coordinator M.Sc.in Financial Mathematics of Colombo University, Sanjeewa Perera told the Business Times.
Mathematical modelling is an area of Applied Mathematics that focuses on studying and describing systems in the real world using mathematical concepts and simulation.
It is widely used in the Natural Sciences, Engineering, Social Sciences and Biology/Medicine.
Mathematical models can be considered as a multidisciplinary tool to handle real problems which are interdisciplinary by nature, he said.
It is used to model and simulate a real-world problem, which results in the understanding of the problem in a cost effective, quicker and safer manner than by conducting experiments.
Due to globalization, there is a growing need for mathematical models, efficient simulations and optimization of existing dynamical processes, he pointed out The Research and Development Centre for Mathematical Modelling (CM2) at the Department of Mathematics, University of Colombo has organized an International Forum for Mathematical Modelling (IFM2) to discuss and share knowledge in mathematical modeling.
This forum is organized under the German Academic Exchange (DAAD) partnership programme in collaboration with University of Kaiserslautern Germany (TUKL), Kathmandu University Nepal and Institute of Technology Bandung Indonesia (ITB). The theme of this forum is “Mathematical Modeling for the Advancement of Interdisciplinary Sciences”.
The main goal of IFM2 is to provide a platform for local and international participants to exchange ideas and facilitate interaction among researches through an international conference and to disseminate these ideas and knowledge to beginners through a modeling week.
The inauguration of the IFMM-2014 will be held on March 13 at 5.00 pm at the Mathematics Department Auditorium, University of Colombo. Ajith Nivad Cabraal, Governor, Central Bank of Sri Lanka will attend as chief guest.
