Another tame draw at Moratuwa
The 64th Battle of the Golds encounter between Prince of Wales and St. Sebastian’s ended in a tame draw at De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa
yesterday.
However the second day’s play belonged to left-arm spinner Lahiru Heshan who ended with a four wicket haul helping his side to restrict Prince of Wales, who was in a strong position of 156 for 3, to score 221 in reply to St. Sebastian’s score of 220 made on day one.
Overnight batsman Kusal Mendis who was unbeaten on 80 was able to add only another nine runs before becoming the first Cambrian batsman to fall for the day with the score on 176 for 4.
The Cambrians late order batting had little to offer as they put the Sebs bowlers on top. From a healthy position of 176 for 3 they collapsed, losing six wickets for the addition of only 45 runs, as they slid to 221 for 9 before making a declaration.
Lahiru’s four wickets at a cost of 48 runs were instrumental in the Sebs come back to the game. With just two sessions of play remaining for the day, after the Cambrians made the declaration, the outcome of a draw was inevitable.
