Commercial Bank supports two more national initiatives in education
View(s):The CSR Trust of the Commercial Bank of Ceylon has donated 134 multi-function laser printers with fax capability to schools that participated in the Mother Sri Lanka Trust’s ‘Project RUN’ in 2013.
The recipients of these printers are the winning schools from 1,000 schools selected for the National Schools Programme by the Ministry of Education and the 950 schools where Mother Sri Lanka clubs are already in operation, the bank said in a media release.
The presentation of these printers took place during the Project RUN ceremony at the Sugathadasa Stadium, at which President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the Chief Guest.
Project RUN (which means Responsible citizenship, Unity, and National pride), is a unique concept where children are encouraged to come up with their own projects, form teams, appoint leaders and find the finances for their projects under the guidance of the Mother Sri Lanka Trust.
Besides its contribution to Project RUN, Commercial Bank’s CSR Trust also recently donated three language laboratories equipped with computers, software and Internet connectivity to three schools chosen to implement the pilot project of the TESS (The English Speaking School) initiative planned and coordinated by the Presidential Initiative, ‘English as a Life Skill’ in association with the Presidential Programmes Unit (PPU) of the Ministry of Education. This initiative was formally launched on 4th March 2014, the bank said.
The three schools that received these fully-equipped language laboratories are Prince of Wales College and Princess of Wales College, Moratuwa and Mahinda Rajapaksa College, Pitipana. Schools that intend enlisting in TESS have to fulfil the criteria of having a computer-aided language or IT lab for teaching languages and a pool of English language teachers.
