An aviation services agreement is being negotiated with Rotana Jet, an Abu Dhabi state-owned airline, to operate flights to Colombo and Mattala.

Representatives from the airline were in the country recently to conduct discussions with the relevant local authorities in this regard. Etihad is the other state-owned commercial airliner from Abu Dhabi that operates regular flights to Colombo. During discussions it was agreed that the flight would operate to both the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) and the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport from next month.

The airline has requested to operate six flights per week on their Airbus with three flying to Mattala and three to BIA. This had been agreed upon based on requirements of the local authorities and the airline’s own needs, an aviation official said.

The carrier is a charter and scheduled service operator that initially conducted domestic operations to about six ports within the UAE alone.
