Eight Indians arrested in Jaffna for overstaying visas

View(s):

A group of eight Indian nationals were yesterday arrested by Special Task Force (STF) personnel at a location in Jaffna, for violating visa conditions, police said yesterday.

They said the group was involved in textile trade in the heart of the Jaffna town, after entering the country on tourist visas.

They were rounded up from a safe-house, on a tip-off from the public, and later handed over to Immigration authorities. According to police and Immigration officials, hundreds, if not thousands of Indian nationals, mostly from Tamil Nadu, are believed to be illegally involved in trade and employment, mainly in the north and east of the country.

Investigations reveal that Indian labour is cheap and therefore, rice field owners in the north and east are known to employ them on a seasonal basis. (LB)
