Selyn’s new look sarees to hit the store soon
The marriage of rustic elegance and delicate femininity through the efforts of Sandra Wanduragala of Selyn and Andrea Boekel saw the launch of their successful joint collection “Hands on Hands” last November. Staying true to its name the array of garments and décor were entirely handcrafted in line with the handloom products which Selyn is renowned for, with touches of Brussels lace and embroidery which just so happen to be Andrea’s forte.
This March the duo have extended their collaboration to sarees with a selection of eye catching entirely hand crafted handloom sarees. “Sarees are our bestseller,” says Selyna, Sandra’s daughter and partner. Breathing a contemporary edge to a traditional art form, the collection will be an array of six yards of hand embroidered, hand painted handloom material with appliqué, lace and embroidery. Among the 600 pieces that make up the collection are a selection of bridal sarees paying tribute to the pastoral beauty of rural Sri Lanka. Pastels, dull golds and olive green add to their grandeur.
Individually designed each piece is one of a kind with white being the popular choice for many of the sarees; being the colour for the Avurudu season as well. An entrepreneur for a cause Selyn is known for their work towards empowering and uplifting women in urban and rural Sri Lanka. Many of the pieces come from as far as Trincomalee, Matale and Galle with the proceeds going to the Selyn Community Development Fund, which continues to build the capacity and better the livelihood of communities within which Selyn’s members come from.
“Hands on Hands” collection of hand made sarees will be unveiled on March 22 at Selyn 102, Fife Road Colombo 5.
