60-year-old man gets 2 years for raping minor

View(s): A 60-year-old man who pleaded guilty to rape charges was sentenced to two years’ rigorous imprisonment by Kandy High Court Judge Manila Waidyatilleke.
During the course of the trial it was revealed that Selliah Subramaniam had committed the crime in 2008 when the victim was only 14 years old and State Counsel Charaka Dharmasiri had called for a stiff sentence as the victim was only a minor.
However, the High Court Judge giving his order said since the accused had tendered an apology and given the other circumstances of the case he would be sentenced to two years on two charges framed against him and the sentence would run concurrently.
