7th annual RAASL Research Conference
View(s):The Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka (RASSL) is holding its 7th Annual Research Conference on Humanities and Social Sciences on Thursday, March 27, Friday 28 and Saturday 29 at the Mahaweli Centre, 96 Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha (Nelum Pokuna Mawatha), Colombo 7. Registration will be from 7 a.m. to – 8.15 a.m on March 27, with sessions commencing at 8.15 a.m. Around 370 abstracts have been submitted to this year’s Research Conference on the following subject areas: Sociology, East-west Encounters, Media, Education, Gender, Governance, Economics, History of Science and Technology, Archaeology, History, Buddhist Studies/Philosophy, Aesthetic Studies, Library Science and Language Studies.
On March 27 at 9 a.m. a Special Symposium on “Dharmapala, Ambedkar and the revival of Buddhism in India and the world” will be held. The speakers and their subjects are: Dr. Ananda Guruge: “Dharmapala and the Buddhist revival in the world”;Prof Y.S. Alone, Jawarhalal Nehru University:“Ambedkar’s embracing of Buddhism and the transformation among Indian Dalits”; Ven. Balangoda Sobhitha Thera “Vidyodaya monastery reception of Dalit Buddhist delegation from South India in the late 19th century”; Susantha Goonatilake “Misunderstanding and distorting Dharmapala by anthropologists and others” and M. Vairawamutthu, Jaffna Tamil Buddhist Association: “The Dalit temple entry issue among Jaffna Hindus and the Jaffna Buddhist movement”.
