Skipper Binura guides DSS to first series win
Skipper and left arm paceman Binura Fernando was the sheet anchor in his side’s first win of the Battle of the Gold big match series when he guided DSS to record an innings and 37 runs win over traditional rivals Mahanama Colombo in their 8th Battle of the Gold encounter which concluded at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday.
Binura along with the right arm pace duo Thimila Vidyasekera and Duleeka Brahmanage wrecked the batting of Mahanama Colombo as the trio shared ten wickets to bowl out. Mahanama resuming on their overnight score of 78 for 4 were bowled out for 104. Binura ended with impressive figures of 6 for 40 while Thimila and Duleeka shared the other four wickets. This was after DSS had made a formidable score of 266 for 5 declared on the opening day thanks to a record third wicket partnership of 173 runs between the Bandara brothers Uvin who made a ton and Kavin making a contribution of 90.
Mahanama made to follow on with a deficit of 162 runs was badly placed on 52 for 3 at the lunch break before Binura came into action again as he ripped through the Mahanama batting for the second time with another impressive figures of 7 for 45 to bundle them out for 125.
Binura ended with a match bag of 13 for 85 which earned him the best bowler and the man of the match awards while Uvin Bandara took the best batsman and Mahanama’s Nayana Prabath taking the best fielders award.
