Cinnamon Nature Trails hosts ‘All about Sperm Whales’
View(s):Cinnamon Nature Trails together with American Express-Nations Trust Bank and Cinnamon Grand Colombo hosted a scintillating talk by Tony Wu, an expert underwater photographer and naturalist recently. Tony Wu is an underwater photographer cum photo naturalist who strives to create captivating images. He records what he sees and shares such information both for research and on his site for anyone who is interested.
His observations and records of marine life compares well with that of a biologist. Tony travels the world, usually with an emphasis on underwater photography, and prefers to visit destinations that are remote, unique and off the beaten path. Photographs, words and videos are tools he uses to communicate what he has experienced and observed. Tony hopes that the tales he relate and lessons he share will have some meaningful, positive and lasting effect upon the people whom he meets and help change how we appreciate the marine realm.
This series of events arranged by American Express-Nations Trust Bank and Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts titled ‘Discover the World Series’ this time took a twist with Cinnamon Nature Trails presenting forty five invites to the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka. The Cedar room of Cinnamon Grand Colombo, where the event was held, was packed to capacity with nature and wildlife enthusiasts who were keen to hear this expert sharing his wealth of experience and knowledge on his talk for that evening, titled ‘All about Sperm Whales’.
Tony Wu, with years of experience and imagery that speaks, together with his knack of speech with a hint of humor had the audience spell bound over fifty minutes that ran out with guests complaining they felt it was just fifteen minutes instead. His imagery of sperm whale behavior from across the world and most rare moments of these amazingly large toothed whales feeding on giant squid, head stands, spy hopping and their social behavior coupled with some unforgettable experiences shed much light on a species often not seen, and certainly not observed under water by most.
“Cinnamon Nature Trails believes that Sri Lanka can be positioned as the Ultimate Island Safari for the increasing nature travel segment, the terrestrial diversity of the island coupled with cetaceans in our waters gives us the edge to become truly the best Island safari experience, experts like Tony can only help us get there faster” said Chitral Jayatilake, Head of Cinnamon Nature Trails.
Tony Wu ended his talk by saying, “Sperm whales, which can be found in the waters of Sri Lanka, are highly intelligent marine mammals, with complex social structures, communication strategies, and other amazing adaptations for living most of their lives at depths of 800 metres or more.
Having an opportunity to share images and stories about these incredible, under-appreciated animals with friends and nature lovers in Colombo was an honour and pleasure’.
