A man who had allegedly killed his 73- year old father because he could not find a box of matches to light a lamp was sentenced to six years rigorous imprisonment by Kandy High Court Judge.

On an earlier date, the accused was sent to a psychiatrist for medical examination.

In this case the family comprising the accused and his parents had gone to bed on the night of the incident when the flame in the lamp had been accidentally snuffed out. The accused had wanted to relight the lamp and had been searching for a box of matches in vain. When his father had told him to forget the lamp and go back to sleep the accused in a fit of rage had taken a crowbar and hit his father on the chest. The old man had succumbed to his injuries.

State Counsel Charaka Dharmasiri had called for deterrent punishment
