Mallika Nivasa Samithiya to hold ‘Avurudu Salpila’

‘Avurudu Salpila’ organised by the Mallika Nivasa Samithiya will be held at Mallika Home , 45, Visakha Road, Colombo 4 on April 6 from 9.30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Avurudu Salpila is being held to raise funds for the Mallika Nivasa homes for destitute, elderly women and orphaned children. On sale will be handicrafts done by the elders, children’s clothes, new and nearly new clothes, sarees, linen, costume jewellery, toys, plants, refreshments and much more at bargain prices.

Established in October 1920, the Mallika Nivasa Samithiya is one of the country’s leading social service organisations.The main aim of Founder Mrs. Mallika Hewavitarne, mother of Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala was to provide shelter for elderly women who were destitute. The home was begun with just two elders and today shelters and cares for nearly 80.

The Parakrama Home for Orphaned Boys, established in 1954, cares for 40 boys between the ages of 6-18 referred to them by the Department of Probation and Child Care. The Sneha Infants Home set up in 1971 cares for 20 infants. The Mallika Nivasa Samithiya also runs a pre-school for children and two paying homes for elders – Seth Medura and Seth Sevena which house some 30 elders at a nominal fee.

The latest addition to their activities is the sales outlet ‘Rasa Bojun’ which sells sweetmeats , short eats and tasty lunch packets made by the elders.
