S. Thomas’, Science seeking to extend winning run
The second round matches of the Singer U20 Schools Rugby League tournament are scheduled to be played today at three venues around the metropolis.
From the three matches that are slotted to be played two teams – S. Thomas’ and Science – the two successful sides from the six teams that will be in action will no doubt be seeking to extend their winning run to be in contention.
S. Thomas’ who are playing in the top division after a lapse of two years have made their intentions clear when they began their campaign with a fine win over defending league champions Dharmaraja while Science coasted to an easy win over St. Anthony’s in their first round match.
This match is no doubt going to be an interesting contest as Science will be coming into the game with their heads held high having recorded a resounding win over St. Anthony’s (29-8) and in contrast St. Peter’s who were held to a 14 all draw by Kingswood, will be aiming to chalk up their first win.
The scales are in favour of the Mt Lavnia boys who are reputed for their die-hard approach. So the Peterites who cannot be satisfied with their first match performance will for sure have to be more positive and a repeat performance in the game against Kingswood would spell doom for them.
S. Thomas’ vs St Anthony’s at Havelock Park
S. Thomas’ are back in their place where they were and are brushing shoulders with the top teams again after being promoted as champions of Segment 1B last season.
They started their campaign in style with a comprehensive win against defending league champions Dharmaraja in their first match and will now strive to continue their winning spree.
The Antonians, most probably on a team building process, were no match for the Science team and how they are going to counter the confidant Thomians who will be seeking their second successive win are left to be seen. The match is also played for the Rev. Fr. Angelo Rosati memorial trophy which was not held for the last three years. The present holders of the trophy are the Antonians.
Royal vs Wesley at Royal Sports Complex
The clash between two teams Royal and Wesley that lost their first match is going to be an interesting one. But looking at the losing margin of the two teams the scale is no doubt in favour of the Reid Avenue boys.
Royal was unfortunate to miss out by a single point against Isipathana while in contrast Wesley went down meekly to St. Joseph’s which gives Royal the edge.
Of course if Royal is looking forward to win matches then the need of the hour for them is a reliable place kicker which actually cost them the game. However besides that they will be coming into the game with a load of confidence.
Also they cannot afford to take the Wesleyites lightly as the tournament has just begun and the strength and weakness of a side cannot be gauged yet. On the other hand the Wesleyites hopefully would have learnt their mistakes to execute their game plan to a match winning way.
