Uva Thomian encounter evenly matched
View(s):The Uva Thomian cricket encounter between the two schools of the same fraternity, namely S.Thomas’ College, Gurutalawa and S.Thomas’ College, Bandarawela which was inaugurated 30 years ago by the headmasters of the two schools -.Patrick Gunawardene and.S.L.A.Ratnayake will be played this year at the Bandarawela Esplanade on April 5.
This year both schools boast of a number of coloursmen and the teams are evenly matched assuring the spectators of a good day’s cricket. This match which is a 50 over encounter has evoked much enthusiasm among the cricket loving community in the Uva province and also will provide the fun and frolic associated with a “Big match” among the young and old of both schools.
The Guru team is captained this year by Supun Fernando, a 2nd year coloursman, who is a stylish right hand bat, a right hand fast medium bowler and a safe fielder at any position. He has Milanjana Silva a 3rd year coloursman who has been in the runs this season as his deputy. He is a top order left hand bat who bowls off spin and is an excellent fielder.
The Bandarawela team is led this year by all-rounder Miuru Shalinda a fifth year coloursman and Hansaka Liyanaarachchi a second year coloursman is the vice captain. Both these players have represented the side from the first encounter once it recommenced in 2010 after a lapse of over 20 years. Both Miuru and Hansaka have been in prolific form during this season with Hansaka also training with the Sri Lankan under 17 Development Squad.
