Last ten minutes burst gives Kingswood win over Science
Kingswood scored their second win in three games when they beat Science College by 29 points to 10 at Bogambara. Kingswood’s points came off three goals, a try and a penalty, while the losers had a solitary goal and a penalty.
If the first half was dominated by the home team, much of the second belonged to the visitors. It was only in the last ten minutes or so that Kingswood bestirred themselves and came back to add two tries.
Six minutes into the game, scrum half Mohammed crept through a gap to touch down. Skipper Asela Wijesinghe converted. Ten minutes later he missed a kickable penalty. Kingswood’s big built centres hit the gaps and looked particularly dangerous. However their tendency to go solo cost their team valuable points. Kingswood got into good positions through numerous deep, cross-kicks.With the back division not breaking through, the pack took over. They pushed the Science College pack back a good twenty yards and then hooker Amarasinghe fell over. This try too was put over by Wijesinghe. This effort came on the stroke of half time for Kingswood to lead 14-0 at the break.
Early in the second half, a Kingswood player was guilty of holding on and M.R.I. Fernando obtained his team’s first points.
Revitalised, Science College attacked furiously. They swarmed all over their opponents and were on to them fast, giving them no respite. Kingswood was pinned on their line for about ten minutes. After a few failed attempts at barging over, Karunatilleke somehow scrambled over. Fernando’s conversion made it 14-10. Science was attacking now and a good break by the number eight saw a threatening move being terminated when the ball was dropped.
The Science full back, minus any support, collected on his goal-line and tried to fight his way through. He was nabbed and Wijesinghe converted the ensuing penalty (17-10). Out of the blue almost, Kingswood came back with a dandy try. The ball changed hands rapidly, the passing was slick and the support play was very good. Weerasekera scored for Wijesinghe to add the extra points.
Jaleel the winger, put the icing on the cake when he ran along the touch line, kicked a grubber, followed up and fell down.
Science set the pulse racing in the second half with some exciting play. However the home team should have won by a little more, at least. Referee: Dinka Peiris
