Base jumping thrill spills into Colombo
View(s):While Colombo is fast becoming a ‘happening’ place, the latest addition to the event list would be base jumping.
The Sri Lanka Convention Bureau is facilitating Draig Technologies of Canada to organise this event in June this year and the team is already in Sri Lanka selecting locations and conducting trials, a media release issued by the Sri Lanka Convention Burea stated.
They have already tested jumps from the World Trade Centre, Bank of Ceylon buildings and Bambarakanda and there would also be a trial in Diyaluma, the release stated.
“Base Jumping is more exciting than parachute jumps because of the perceived risk factor and the thrill of having to jump within a given distance,” General Manager of Sri Lanka Convention Bureau Vipula Wanigasekera said.
The defence authorities have provided the necessary permission in this regard, and were facilitating in the process, it was pointed out.
“This event will not only publicise Sri Lanka overseas as a location for base jumping but also bring in revenue with the participants who follow this event from all over the world,” Mr. Wanigasekara said.
The race team was in the country, led by Gareth Parry, to identify locations and SLCB would assist organisers and local handling Company Aitken Spence Conventions to make this event a success, he noted.
