‘Connected Business’, a company’s revenue in modern world
View(s):Being in a particular industry, either in banking, insurance, etc., it is important to figure out how to move away from its traditional way of thinking, to improve its output. This is especially vital when it comes to the relationship between the company its customers and suppliers. Thinking out of the box is also essential, from a long term perspective, and especially in terms of what can be done, and the ways of integrating better with customers and others, so everyone has a richer overall experience.
These comments were made by Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana Founder Chairman and CEO of WSO2, speaking at the WSO2Con Asia 2014 held at the Water’s Edge in Colombo recently,
Dr. Weerawarana also stressed the importance of connected business for an organisation. “There are many ways in which connected business can bring revenue to a company. A connected car, which simply means vehicle to vehicle communication, will be helpful to avoid accidents by interacting with another vehicle that is moving ahead. Software applications being installed in the car would enable this to happen,” he said. He also elaborated on other aspects of connected business such as connected home, connected health, connected supply chain, connected telecom, connected retail, connected banking, connected government and connected manufacturing.
He noted that WSO2, with its open source network, enables its partner companies to better experience modern technology in the growing Information Technology era. Open standards, open source, open business model, open architecture, open development and many more open features are all available at WSO2, he added. Every single product at WSO2 has a unique code. The company, started in 2005, is rapidly growing with long term planning, said Dr. Weerawarana.
Dialog Axiata PLC Group CEO, Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, in his keynote address, spoke about the digital services that are being developed, bringing out its latest impact in society. “In another five to six years time frame, there will be more than five billion Internet users. The middle class society is emerging and there will be more than 10 devices connected to the Internet at the same time in the future,” he added.
Dr. Wijayasuriya stressed that the greatest opportunity for digital service explosion resides in Asia. By 2015, 54 per cent of Asians would be using smartphones and 80 per cent by 2020. Mobile phones penetration will reach 100 per cent well before 2020. He also noted that 36 per cent of South Asians and 31 per cent of South East Asians live on less than US$ 1.25 per day.
In order to keep pace with today’s connected customers, it is essential for companies to become connected. In a broader context, this means that companies should increase their efforts in deeply engaging with workers, partners, and customers while changing the type of work that can be done. It requires coming up with new ways of thinking about the company and treating it more like a complex and dynamic system that can learn and adapt over time.
The WSO2 conference was held for the third time in Sri Lanka. The 3-day conference was aimed at providing technology insights for a connected business.
