Government is to introduce 100 new road signs next month, in a fresh bid to reduce road accidents and keep up with international traffic regulations, a Motor Traffic Department official said.

The gazette notifications regarding these regulations are to be published within the next two weeks.

A sign prohibiting areas for pedestrians, a sign for closure of roads, a sign prohibiting three-wheelers and motorcycles, a sign for vehicles transporting inflammable items including gas, and new signals for traffic lanes are among the new signs coming up, he explained.

In addition, changes will be made in existing signboards where in some cases colours and sizes will be changed, making it convenient to motorists and other road users.

All signs used on the expressways will also be included in the gazette notification.

“Motorists will have to study these new signs and be familiar with the changes introduced,” the official said.

He said that those sitting the written test to obtain driving licences, will have to study these new signs as their knowledge on the new signs will also be tested.

He said that the Road Development Authority (RDA) will be in charge of installing the new signboards.
