Heating milk until it overflows in homes is a tradition during Avurudu times – a practice meant to bring joy and success to the family.
The clay pots in which the milk is heated are rarely left out of Avurudu shopping lists but production of the pots has dropped sharply though demand remains high.

“People come looking for these pots but sometimes we don’t have enough products to meet the demand,” said Lalith Sanjeewa from Pepiliyana who has been selling clay pots for five years.

His area was known for the production of the clay pots but he said potters were now scarce and also found it hard to get clay.
Now he gets in pots from areas such as Mawanella and Ranala.

The most popular vessels were those made thin because they heated quickly and saved gas.
