A chip off the old block
Mineth Heenkande, the skipper and medium pacer of the Lyceum International School, Nugegoda Under-13 Champion cricket side, produced two outstanding efforts with the ball. He claimed six wickets in eight balls and finished with figures of 7 for 13 against
Wycherley International School. What was noteworthy was that his first six wickets were all claimed unaided, (five bowled, one LBW).
Mineth repeated the deadly cocktail against Gateway International Kandy who were bundled out for 68, his figures on this occasion were 5 for 8. In five matches in the tournament, Mineth bagged 16 wickets, of which 12 were bowled, two were LBW and two caught.
In case you wonder what is in his genes, Mineth’s father Pradeep Heenkande played for Dharmaraja College for three years, captaining in 1991. An attacking batsman and a quickish off-spinner, Pradeep had above average performances. Having played hockey for his school, he went on to represent the Sri Lanka team in India.
A Branch Manager of the Commercial Bank, Pradeep qualified as a lawyer and represented the Sri Lankan Lawyers in two World Cup tournaments. Pradeep has always been unassuming and level-headed. His son’s outstanding achievements are a source of great pride to him. The truism that sons are seldom as good as the fathers, and that daughters are seldom as beautiful as the mothers, could apply in the case of the Heenkandes.
