Dwindling population trends in Sri Lanka

My family recently attended the union of the descendents of my wife’s grandfather in Peradeniya, Kandy. A very interesting piece of numbers about his dependency was discussed that shows how fast our population growth rate is dwindling.

The grandfather had nine children, and those nine children in turn had 45 sons and daughters. The total number of off-springs of that 45 is 81.

Consider this growth rate: From the grandfather the average number of children was nine who each produced five children (45/9). The 45 children in turn had a total of 81 which works out to a growth rate of 1.8 (per person). From 9 to 5 to 1.8, isn’t this precipitously rapid, would we end up with minus growth?
