The tourism-dependant Maldives organised a one-day investment forum in Singapore on April 25 to attract foreign investors to other projects including oil and gas exploration in a country made up of more than 1,000 tiny islands.

At least 300 had registered to attend the Maldives’ first ever Maldives Investment Forum (MIF) organised by the Ministry of Economic Development, the ministry said.

It was inaugurated by Maldives President Abdulla Yameen, and aimed to attract a mix of master developers, financiers, and project promoters from all across the globe, Economic Development Minister Mohamed Saeed said.

The projects that require foreign investment are the expansion of the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, oil and gas exploration and two integrated developments. The government earlier called off the contract with an Indian-Malaysian combine that was earlier involved in the management and expansion of the airport in a dispute over the contract terms.
