Make others happy
View(s):Recently, I perceived some interesting interpretations on happiness on social media. Most of my friends have commented on happiness and for some of them happiness is finishing an exam, a picnic with friends or singing alone while bathing. For some others it is just sleeping, eating or chatting and some equate it to money or fame. Whatever it is we cannot degrade it because happiness is something extremely personal and psychological. It is what we all attempt to reach at the end through different means either consciously or unconsciously.
Can you remember the happiest day of your life? You might have manifold answers. Once I asked myself and several answers emerged simultaneously. Getting the highest grade at the exam, receiving a gift, meeting a particular person unexpectedly, or watching a breathtaking cricket match which brings victory to Sri Lanka, are some of them. Mostly, the list carries superficial personal achievements but regrettably the happiness that arises with the feeling of possession or personal achievement diminishes soon. Good grades at a particular exam is certainly a source of happiness but diminishes soon when several other more important exams replace it.That is the reality, isn’t it? At the end the easiest verdict that we all tend to reach is ‘happiness does not last long’.
Yet, this verdict is not always true.Let me give you some examples. Sharing your notes with a friend, donating some of the books you loved very much, visiting your grandparents and having a little chat with them or placing a water basket at the garden and observing the way birds bathe and dance, bring us a long lasting happiness which does not diminish. As I beleive the reason behind that is simply all those are acts performed for others and free from the feeling of possession.
Now we can reach an alternative assumption, ‘happiness is making others happy’ and for me that is more profound. Making others happy is easier than we think, sometimes just a smile is enough. The International Day of Happiness passed by March 20 but don’t restrict yourself to it because dates do not matter for happiness.
Make others happy as much as possible, share happiness, and create happiness because happiness never decreases by being shared. This article was written by a Stitch volunteer. For more information visit ww.stitchmovement.com or find us onFacebook or Twitter (ID: StitchMovement)
