Mystery clouds accident of luxury car sans number plates
View(s):Mystery surrounds the circumstances of a luxury motorcar that was involved in a May Day accident at Narahenpita. The American-built Shelby Ford Cobra struck a pavement block before hitting a three-wheeler.The car, minus registeration number plates, was moving at an excessive speed when the incident took place, eye witnesses said.
They said that the first to arrive on the scene were army commandos instead of traffic police. Chief Inspector (CI) Sarath Premachandra of the Borella Police said that an individual had been booked for the traffic offence and later released on police bail, while the car was allowed to be towed away to a garage. The man was taking the vehicle to be handed over to another person for a possible test run when the accident took place, CI Premachandra added.
Police Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajith Rohana said that investigations were currently under way to ascertain how the driver was able to take the car on the road minus registration number plates, particularly on a day when extra police personnel were all over. The spokesman also claimed that the vehicle was traced to a businessman residing in an upmarket residential area.
