Lakshani qualifies for World Junior Athletics Championship

The completion of day two of the 57th Junior National Athletic Championship held at the Sugathadasa Stadium saw five more records tumble which brought the tally of records to 11 so far.
The best record breaking performance came from Vidusha Lakshani of Newstead BV Negombo in the Under 20 triple jump event where she leaped to a record of 12.99 metres which erased the existing record of 12.09m set by Ishali Chandrasekera of Ferguson Girl’s High School Ratnapura in 2006.

Vidusha Lakshani’s record breaking performance saw her getting qualified for the forthcoming World Junior Athletics Championship to be held in Eugene, USA.
Vidusha will join star sprinter Himasha Eashan who has also achieved qualifying standard for the 100 and 200m events at the World Junior Athletics Championship.Eashan did not participate in the Junior National Athletics Championship as he was due to take wing to Thailand for the Thai Open. But according to sources he has withdrawn due to injury and has to undergo treatment.
The other records for the day were one in the girl’s events and three in the boy’s events. The record in the girl’s event was established in the U23 10000m race walk where P.B. Gayani of Army set a new timing of 57.15.5secs to eclipse the existing record of 1.00.22.2 by Army’s U.V.K. Madurika last year.
The three records in the boy’s events comprised of one in the field which was a postponed U-23 pole vault event on day one and two in the track.
Ishara Sandaruwan of Air Force leaped a jump of 4.50m to better the record of 4.41 by Channa Fernando of Army in 2006.
The two track records were both in the 110m hurdles event which was in the U-18 and U-23 age groups. In the U-18 event Akila Ravishanka of Seevali MMV Ratnapura set a new record of 14.53secs eclipsing the record of 14.65 by S.D.U.A. Digamadugoda of Anuradhapura MMV set in 2007. Supun Randeniya bettered his own record of 14.45secs when he established a new record of 14.27 in the U-23 110m hurdles which he set last year. The completion of the second day in the four day championship has so far seen the outstation athletes dominating the proceedings.
The opening day of the meet saw six new records being established with four in the girls and two in the boys with all being achieved by athletes from the outstation.
The third day’s proceedings will get underway at 8.00 am today comprising in 35 the track and 13 in the field events.
