Tea production drops by 10 per cent in 1Q
View(s):Sri Lanka’s tea crop has fallen by 10 per cent in the first quarter this year compared to the same period in 2013.
The Sri Lanka Tea Board has officially confirmed March 2014 tea crop at 25.6 million kg which is lower by about 22 per cent on the 32.7 million kg of last year. The High Grown production of 5.96 million kg is lower by about 23.6 per cent, whilst the Medim Grown figure of 4.36 million kg is lower by about 22 per cent and the Low Grown figure of 15.25 million kg is lower by about 21 per cent for the year-on-year March 2013, the Asia Siyaka Tea Market report stated.
Reviewing the quarter, the January to March High Grown production of 17.32 million kg is lower by about 11 per cent on the 2013 figure of 19.46 million kg. Similarly the Medium Grown todate quantity of 11.82 million kg and the Low Grown quantity of 44.41 million kg is lower by about 9 per cent and 10 per cent respectively on the 2013 figures of 12.98 and 49.22 million kg.
The total for the first quarter 2014 is lower about 10 per cent with 73.5 million kgs compared to the 81.7 million kgs of 2013, it was stated.
