The South Asia Summit on Youth and Human Rights 2014 took place recently at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapakse theatre. This was the second South Asia regional summit and one of five regional summits that was held around the world as part of the World Educational Tour for Peace 2014 covering from regions spanning Central and South America, Europe, Africa and South Asia. The summit hosted discussions on human rights, human rights education as well as development of economic infrastructure for the benefit of the community.

“The basic aim of the conference was to gather youth and empower them to be educated on human rights and eventually to create a proper platform for them to work on creating awareness on a global level,” said Piumee Vithanage of the organizing committee. “An open invitation was made to the public to apply as delegates for the conference. We also spoke to leading youth led movements and non-government organizations and invited two potential representatives as delegates from each organization.”

Applicants were chosen following an interview process and those who were not selected were given the opportunity to participate as observers at the summit. The summit was co-organized by Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI), and the youth-led movement The Road to Rights, supervised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skill Development, the Ministry of Mass Media and Information and the National Youth Services Council. The summit was also recognized by the World Conference on Youth 2014; the outcome document is due to be made public shortly.
