Diesel and Motor Engineering (DIMO) Plc is opening its doors for Sri Lankan young women to pursue automobile training at DIMO Automobile Training Schools (DATS) in Colombo and Jaffna, a top official of the company revealed.

Ranjith Pandithage, Chairman and Managing Director of DIMO told the Business Times that this decision has been taken to provide automobile training for young women along with their male counterparts as women are also keen to enter the motor mechanic and engineering filed.

A new batch of female students are undergoing training for the first time at the state-of-the-art automobile training school in Colombo and Jaffna managed by DIMO under the guidance of Daimler AG, Germany, he disclosed.

Young women in Jaffna were also keen to enter the automobile maintenance field and DIMO has stepped in to meet their training needs, Mr. Pandithage said.

DATS is a one-of-a-kind privately owned institute where the curriculum is set by Mercedes-Benz and the students are exposed to the most modern automobile technologies in the world.

The training school offers students a professional learning atmosphere with industry standard equipment and qualified lecturers who provide automotive trainees the necessary foundation for an aspiring career in the field of automotive engineering and mechanics.
The training school started in 1990 and it handles 32 trainees per batch for a two-year training course, free of charge, he said, adding that some of their graduates are now working in leading automobile manufacturing companies overseas.

DATS training facilities include latest E-Class and B-Class cars for practical study and an e-learning centre.

This project is considered as a CSR initiative by DIMO, where talented young men and women are given the opportunity to follow the advanced studies in automobile engineering – absolutely free of charge, he said.

DIMO was the first automobile company to establish itself in Jaffna following the end of the North East war, and became the only company to set up a training school in post-war Jaffna in 2010.

This was developed as an extension of the Colombo DATS School. 32 youth in Jaffna are currently undergoing automobile training , he revealed.
