Mobitel to add 1,800 base stations

Sri Lanka’s Mobitel will be adding 1,800 new base stations island-wide to its network as part of its current stage of expansion, from its 3,500 present, with the ultimate goal being 100 per cent population coverage.

Highlighting this and other points as part of its commemoration of this year’s International Telecommunications and Information Society Day, marked on May 17, the local celco also noted that, since its beginnings in 1993, it had invested US$ 500 million.
Additionally, the company also signalled that it “expected to advance its Internet and broadband services and to introduce ICT applications with the view of facilitating development, both in the public and private sector to promote sustainable developmen in the country…

The company’s strategy is positioned around value innovation and customer centricity which is achieved through the development of new technology, distribution systems, product portfolios and value added services, with increased focus on customer needs and interests through optimum levels of service quality and delivery”.

Mobitel also indicated that it had “several direct collaborations with ministries and partnered with [multiple] government institutions on numerous occasions to provide quality services to the general public with the support of the government, the primary benefactor of essential services to the people. The company’s strong relationship with the government has enabled Mobitel to make a significant contribution in crucial areas such as healthcare, education, transport and water supply by combining its expertise in communications and information technology in the various sectors to serve the people through the provision of essential services”.

“To converge on global trends and advancements in technology, Mobitel intends to further enhance its scope and quality driven objectives to provide a better service to its customers,” added the company’s acting Chief Executive Kapila Chandrasena.
