A 22-year-old undergraduate was allegedly stabbed to death by her soldier boyfriend in Elpitiya town last morning, police said.
The victim, Bimasha Gayanithi Thrimanna, a second-year student at the Aesthetic University, Colombo, had left her home in Niyagama, Thalgaswala at around 3.30 that morning, saying that she was going to the hostel in Colombo, family members said.

Clad in a blue T-shirt and black denim, Bimasha’s body was found near her travel bag, which contained her textbooks.

Police said that she had been dragged into a building under construction and had her throat slit with a sharp weapon.

Her fiancé, Tharindu Indrajith Athukorala (24), a soldier attached to the Gemunu Watch Thanthirimale Camp and a resident of Opatha in Elpitiya, was arrested in connection with the murder. He had earlier informed police that his girlfriend had been left murdered in the building behind the bus stand.

An off-duty policeman had seen the suspect near this building around 4.20 the same morning, while on his way in a three-wheeler to drop his family members at the

Later, Sergeant Mendis recognised the suspect when he came to inform the police of his girlfriend’s murder. Upon questioning, the suspect confessed to the murder.

It was later revealed that the suspect had phoned Bimasha, asking her to meet him at the bus stand, where an argument ensued, which led to the murder, police said.

Elpitiya Acting Magistrate Janaka Ruwanpura visited the scene of the crime.
