The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) on Tuesday will launch an islandwide campaign to collect electronic waste (e-waste) such as discarded computers, televisions, refrigerators, mobile phones and mobile phone batteries, and CFL bulbs among others.
CEA Director General Dr Saranga Alahapperuma told the Sunday Times that the objective of the programme was to prevent e-waste being discarded along with normal garbage, which cause environmental problems
He said that, currently, about 60 metric tons of e-waste is discarded annually, with some of it seeping into waterways, polluting drinking water as well. “This could lead to a major health issue including cancer, kidney disorders, problems in the nervous system and vision,” he added.

He said the campaign will be launched at the BMICH on Tuesday, with some 400 collecting centres being set up.

“From Tuesday, people could call the hotline- 0719 692 005, or send an email- ewastecea@gmail.com, for information on the collection centres. Trucks will also be operating,” he said.

He said that 22 private companies which sell electronic items are supporting the campaign.

He said that government depts, universities and schools have been directed to hand over their e-waste, with appeals to the private sector to make use of the opportunity.

Dr Alahapperuma said that e-waste collected will be handed over to companies with licences to export them to selected countries which have the capacity to recycle the material.

He said that, at the end of next week’s campaign, they hope to set up permanent e-waste collection centres, and also launch an awareness campaign.
