Asantha Christie a novel experience
View(s):To most Sri Lankan sports fans the mention of the name Asantha Christie will probably inspire nothing more than a series of blank expressions. In Malaysia however the name is closely associated with long distance running, where Christie has built a reputation for himself as a prime marathoner.
Twenty-six-year-old Christie, who hails from Dunuwila, Kandy, showed glimpses of his long distance gifts at school, winning a number of road and cross country races.
Even after moving to Kelaniya he did not give up on his running and continued to claim gold at a number of regional events. After leaving for Malaysia just after school, Christie was determined to maintain his passion for long distance running.
It did not take him long to finish at the top of the podium, with him winning gold at the Milo International Half Marathon.
Christie’s notable performance caught the attention of famous shoe manufacturing company Brookes, which came forward to sponsor him.
Later he came in second place at the famous Standard Charted half marathon. Last year he came down to Colombo for the LSR Marathon and afterward he participated in the Gold Coast Marathon in Australia.
At present Christie is training under veteran coach Elvin Nadan in Brickfield, where he is preparing for more success in the miles ahead.
