Former Kiwi International to boost Sri Lanka netball
Former New Zealand Netball international Margaret Foster will be arriving in Sri Lanka on June 1 as a consultant coach to the Sri Lanka netball team that is undergoing residential training at the Sports Ministry.
The Sri Lankan national netball team will be taking part in the 9th edition of the Asian Netball Championship scheduled to be worked off in September at Singapore. Sri Lankan lasses will be highly benefited from the vast experience and knowledge of this former Kiwi international who presently coaches the Canterbury Flames and is the Assistant Coach of Southern Steel. Foster will work with the national pool players who are determined to win this year’s Asian championship which they missed in 2012 losing to Singapore in a do-or-die battle by just one point.
Presently the Lankan lasses who are on high moral are under the wings of Deepthi Alwis who hails from Anuradhapura, having the credit of leading the country at three Asian Championships and three World Cups. In the 1995 World Cup at Birmingham Deepthi led a brave Sri Lankan team beating Republic of Ireland, Bermuda and Scotland to finish at the 15th position in world rankings. Sri Lanka was placed at 19th position prior to the tournament. Deepthi is very confident that the present team will keep the national flag flying high at the games with their superb team work and fine combination as a unit to be crowned the Netball Queens of Asia 2014.
Sri Lanka Netball Federation suffered a setback when the Australian Netball Federation rejected their appeal for a Technical Advisor’s service but the New Zealand Netball Federation was kind enough to grant the services of Foster to boost the Sri Lankan national netball team.
