The Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of the Colombo National Hospital has called for the Government Analyst’s report to determine the cause of the death of an administrative secretary of a private hospital in Narahenpita after a gas cylinder fell on her.

JMO of the Colombo National Hospital -Dr. Uppala Artigala- called for the Government Analyst’s report at the inquiry into the death of 39-year-old Thushari Upalani Gamage, a mother of two, who was attached to Lanka Hospitals Ltd and a resident of Parakandeniya in Imbulgoda.

Ms Gamage is reported to have died while inspecting a batch of cylinders whose expiry dates had lapsed. One of the cylinders is reported to have fallen on her leg during the inspection.

Pushpakumara Wanigathunga 45, a security fire bridge officer of the hospital giving evidence at the Coroners Court said the deceased was responsible for checking goods.

“She went with me to the store room to take out two gas cylinders whose expiry dates had lapsed. During the inspection one of the cylinders fell and rolled leaking toxic gases. It hit the victim’s leg and she started to bleed profusely,” he said.

Ms. Gamage called for help and was rushed to the hospital’s accident ward where she succumbed to her injuries around 7 pm.
Inquirer into Sudden Deaths Ashroff Rumi said he would give his verdict after he received a report from the government analyst on June 3. (CS)
