Attack on SB’s car: Pera grads warned and discharged
View(s):Eight men who graduated from Peradeniya University have been severely warned and discharged by Kandy’s Chief Magistrate after they pleaded guilty and volunteered to pay Rs. 100,000 as compensation for damaging the car of Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake four years ago.
Chief Magistrate A.M.A. Vasantha Kumar said he was discharging the eight men in the hope that they would become useful citizens of the country, though their behaviour was unbecoming of university students.
The eight men were undergraduates when they caused damage to the minister’s car on July 12, 2010 during his visit to the university amidst a students’ protest.
On the instructions of the Attorney General, Peradeniya Police filed plaint on two counts — unlawful assembly and causing damage to the minister’s car. The damage was estimated at Rs 59,000.
