Govt. stops military takeover of lands in north
View(s):The Government has suspended plans by the military to acquire 25 different plots of land in the Northern Province.The Land Commissioner General’s Department has issued a directive to the Northern Provincial Land Commissioner not to go ahead with the proposed acquisition of lands in the Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mullativu districts.
The request to acquire the lands for the Army was made by the Defence and Urban Development Ministry. The state-owned lands of varying extents are located in Puthukkudiyiruppu, Tellippalai, Vellamullivaikkal, Valikamam, Karachi, Kopay, Nedunkeni, Chavakachcheri, Nallur, Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Kandaveli and Musali.
Meanwhile, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has organised a protest tomorrow at Kopay in Jaffna to demand the release of privately owned lands now held by the security forces in Jaffna.
“We are demanding that the lands of 272 families in the Vallai area of Kopay be released to the villagers who fled the areas some 25 years ago,” a spokesman said.
