Prof. Gunatilleke to deliver Thilo Hoffman Memorial Lecture
The Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) monthly lecture on Thursday, June 19 will be at the Department of Metereology Auditorium, 383, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7, at 6.15 p.m.
This will be the Thilo Hoffman Memorial Lecture and it will be delivered by Prof. Savitri Gunatilleke who will speak on ‘ Understanding Sri Lanka’s natural forest services and their linkages to human welfare’.
Emeritus Prof. Savitri Gunatilleke served the Department of Botany, University of Peradeniya for 40 years where she pioneered teaching and research in forest ecology. Dr. Gunatilleke’s Ph.D thesis was on ‘The ecology of the endemic tree species of Sri Lanka in relation to their conservation’.
Dr. Gunatilleke has been the recipient of many awards including the Charles Bullard Fellowship of Harvard University ( 1982-83), the prestigious UNESCO Sultan Qaboos prize for environmental preservation (as a co-recipient) in 1997 and the General Research Committee Award of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) in 2011.
